PostScripts Lowcountry Blog Meet Up April

Last Sunday April 22; I attended the local Blogger Meet-Up organized by Heather Solos at PostScripts. PostScripts posts about all “the Lowcountry Bloggers comings and goings in the active local blogging community”! “These days it's written primarily by Heather Solos of Moncks Corner Moments and administered by Dan Conover of Xark!". If you have a blog in the Lowcountry, SC your site should and needs to be listed on their Big Blogroll at PostScripts for terrific coverage! Currently there are at least 146 Lowcountry Bloggers!

The Blogger Meet-Up gave me the opportunity to become acquainted with the faces of fantastic people behind their blogs in the Lowcountry. The conversations were well rounded - refreshingly mentally stimulating with my evening ending in everyone enjoying laughter about South Park cartoons!

Whom I met from the Big Blogroll:

Heather Solos:“is a 28 year old professional blogger and stay-at-home-mom. She is the mother of 2 boys and also has a stepdaughter. Heather was a professional chef in her pre-kids life, but became a stay-at-home mom when she was pregnant with her first son. She works for Charleston.net, writing the Low Country Blogs roundup. She also keeps a personal blog, Moncks Corner Moments. Heather wants everyone to know you do not have to become the picture of Donna Reed or June Cleaver to be a successful SAHM.” Currently Heather is 23 weeks pregnant!

Heather Solos is also in partnership with Home Ec 101, “What You Wish Your Mama Taught You”.

Dave accompanied with Kathy. Dave has written a novel Prodigal Child ("Who among us is not our own worst enemy? Which of us does not wish for a second chance? Which of us does not have an inner artist trying to break free? Prodigal Child is a satisfying and charming read because it deals convincingly with these very personal, yet universal, issues.")

Dave:“I am an ex-framebuilder. My bikes have been ridden in the Tour de France, Olympics, and World Championships. My experience dates back to 1957, I retired from the bicycle business in 1993. This is a place where I post articles, stories, and personal thoughts primarily about bicycles.” Dave Moulton's Bike Blog

Two impressive young 22 year old Gentlemen, Jared and Kevin whom rekindled my hope for Society’s’ future:

Jared has co-written the book, Building Online Communities with Drupal, phpBB, and WordPress

Jared: “Hi, I’m Jared. No, not the guy from the prominent submarine sandwich chain — sorry to disappoint you. I’m 22, a Web designer, student, gadget geek, and…well…everything else under the sun living in Charleston, SC. I’ve done a lot: I’ve co-written a book, gotten halfway decent at designing a website, and…well, you’ll have to dive in a bit to find out. The website’s here to put my daily exploits on display, help me showcase some of the many things I do… JAREDWSMITH.COM

Kevin: I am a 22 year old man who lives in South Carolina. I am interested in writing stories (science fiction, fantasy, or whatever else steals my attention for a while). I also like drawing, though most of my drawing seems to lean towards illustration. I have an interest in music, and can play the harmonica. At various times, I have felt some interest in design, learning the guitar, and videography, but I admittedly have some "focus" issues. I have currently finished a Book of Poetry that I am going to try to publish, God willing. I am also working on designs for a High Fantasy style novel, and a collection of dream-based paintings. Aside from these particular goals my only real goals are to keep doing what I am doing. Thank you for your interest in me and my site, not to mention my work…

Kevin has several excellent sites! Stones In My Passway… “(The blog, soapbox, and journal for the website Leaves Tremble On The Tree)” Several of his art and poems…. Can be found at Leaves Tremble On The Tree, To Consolate My Mind “(The philosophical side of Leaves, where ideas and curiosity is put down to paper, so to speak)”

I believe Vera’s Husband made an appearance Sunday!

Saphyre Rose: I am a 24 year cancer survivor who was given 3 months to live. Due to the chemo and radiation I now have nerve damage and Fibromyalgia. But at least I am alive! Poem VA Tech

The Caged Bird did pluck the Sprouted Innocent ones whose wings are now forever tucked beneath those of Angels

While your heads fall against shoulders to weep upon

Know the People in the World embrace each and every one of you.

Damn the pain you must now endure

No logic will ever be enough to explain the damnation of yet another horrid

Drugs and/or crime Society can combat

But of this new mind madness spree

Mothers killing their young, fellow students gone a rave

Little is known on how to Serve and Protect

But if even one death should give a way to save others,

May all not be in vain

But damn - too much of a cost.

Come, the arms of the People in the World are open

Let us help catch your tears.

Give Scarlet Knights Back Their Fame!

Rather you are for or against Imus, the simple fact is, as someone once said, “A Joke Isn't A Joke When It Hurts Someone”. I say enough about Imus, let us give the Scarlet Knights back their moment of fame! For all those who have posted about Imus or not , let us equally post for the Rutgers University Women's Basketball Team! Let us bring back their moment, the moment they as a team worked hard to earn!

(“The Rutgers University women's basketball team started their season with four losses and two wins. Despite a rocky start, they overcame adversity on the court and made it to the NCAA championship game. Although they lost to Tennessee in the finals, the underdogs were proud of how they came together as a team.

Their moment of glory didn't last long. On April 4, 2007, the morning after Tennessee walked away with the national title, radio talk show host Don Imus” remarks... Oprah)

And now lets hear it for the Scarlet Knights! :

“For the Scarlet Knights (27-8), it will be their first ever appearance in the national championship game.”

“[CLEVELAND, Ohio – All-America forward Candace Parker scored 17 points and guard Shannon Bobbitt added 13 as Tennessee dashed Rutgers' national title hopes with a 59-46 win over the Scarlet Knights in the NCAA Women's Basketball championship game at the Quicken Loans Arena.

The victory gave the Lady Vols (34-3) their seventh NCAA Women's Basketball Championship all-time, and ended the championship dream of the Scarlet Knights (27-9), who were appearing in their first-ever championship contest. The loss snapped an eight-game win streak for Rutgers, which won three straight to claim the BIG EAST Tournament championship last month, and added five more victories in the NCAA Tournament, including a win over Arizona State for the Greensboro Regional title.

"What can I say? Tennessee played great. I think we played hard, we tried to play hard a little bit too late," said Rutgers head coach C. Vivian Stringer.

While Rutgers was able to hold the Lady Vols' to 15 points below their season average, Tennessee had a decided rebounding average, 42-34, including 24 offensive boards. The Lady Vols scored 22 second chance points.

"Tennessee was big and all those other things, but they killed us on the boards, and it was a matter of (us)blocking out. We have played against other big people, and blocking out is an effort thing that anybody and everybody can do," Stringer added. "When you look at a team as big as them, then you have to do it, and we just didn't."

Sophomore center Kia Vaughn led Rutgers with 20 points, but was the only Scarlet Knight to score in double figures. Juniors Essence Carson and Matee Ajavon, who sparked the Scarlet Knights' NCAA semifinal win over LSU by combining for 31 points, each scored eight points.

"We just didn't rebound well, and they beat us to every loose ball," said sophomore forward Heather Zurich. "We didn't hit good shots. You know, the shots aren't always going to fall, but we could have done more. We could have done more on the defensive side of it. We just didn't play with the heart today that we had all season."

The Lady Vols outscored the Scarlet Knights 17-6 in the final 9:26 of the first half, snapping a 12-12 tie and taking a 29-18 lead at halftime. Alberta Auguste came off the bench to spark Tennessee in the first half, scoring eight of her 10 points in the initial stanza.

Rutgers was able to climb back to within seven points in the second half when Vaughn hit a short jumper to cut the Lady Vols' lead to 35-28 with 13:34 remaining, but Tennessee outscored the Scarlet Knights 11-3 over the next 4:40 to extend its lead to 46-30.

Rutgers once again trimmed the lead to single digits when it pulled to within 50-42 with 2:35 left, but Tennessee hit 9-of-10 free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.

"Losing is very hard for us," said freshman guard Ephiphanny Prince. "We just wanted to come out and play hard, but they played harder than us."

Parker was named the Most Outstanding Player in the Final Four, and was joined on the All-Tournament team by Vaughn and Ajavon. Parker's teammates Bobbitt, and Nicky Anosike, were also named to the All-Tournament team. Bobbitt hit 4-of-8 from three-point range, while Anosike helped the Lady Vols control the glass with 16 rebounds.

Despite the loss, Scarlet Knights still enjoyed one of their top seasons in history. The Scarlet Knights rebounded from a 2-4 start to win 25 of their last 30 games, including the BIG EAST tourney title and the NCAA Greensboro Region championship.

"I think that just so much credit has to be given to these young ladies, who came from nothing to do so much, and basically stun everybody," Stringer added. "I think they did a wonderful job and I'm really proud because they gave me a lot of confidence … this was no doubt the most rewarding year that I have had."]”Scarlet Knights News

Save the Easter Lilies - Gardening At Its’ Best

To and fro work takes me up and down East Montague Avenue:

“[The following blog entry was sent to you from: ***@***.***
It came from the blog: Charleston Blog
The entry is titled: Olde North Charleston
The entry can be found here: http://www.charleston.com/blog/index.cfm/2007/2/8/Olde-North-Charleston

As Charleston county experiences continued growth in all directions (except, of course, seaward), tract subdivisions pop up to the North and South, further and further from downtown. In an age that finds the old-fashioned neighborhood harder and harder to come by, Park Circle and East Montague Avenue remain relatively unchanged from an era long gone by.

Just a short, ten-minute drive up Spruill Avenue from downtown Charleston, East Montague and the Park Circle neighborhood still have the look and feel that the "Olde Village" had fifty years ago. Four blocks of wide streets with free parking are lined with shops, restaurants and other businesses, and offer visitors and local residents alike a relaxed place to stroll, eat, drink, and, increasingly, shop.

Restaurants include the homey and delightful Idle Hour; the popular Sesame ("burgers and beer"); the "Best Burger in Charleston" 2006 winner from the Post and Courier, Johnny's Olde Village Grill; the ultra-retro Meat-n-three of Aunt Bea's (which also houses a miniature U.S Post Office and takes in alterations - I am not kidding); and one of the best Irish Pubs in the South, Madra Rua. Park Circle coffee and cream is a free wi-fi hotspot, as well as a fine place for sandwiches, sprits, and of course, coffee and local color. There are two spa/salons, SoCal day spa and Bella Bella, as well as A gardening store, a convenience store, and a variety of other businesses.

For a map showing the greater Charleston area and the location of "the Olde Village", click here:

To map for yourself or to program a navigation system, use an address on East Montague Avenue in North Charleston, such as 1087 E. Montague.]”

Just so happens the other day I had a hankering for some different kind of viddles. I decided around 4 pm to venture into that Aunt Bea's Restaurant at the 1050 building. (Rumor has it there are also lots of Politics a brew within). Unfortunately, the Restaurant wasn’t open for dinner until after 5 pm. Nonetheless; inside I did get to see the functioning miniature ‘old fashion general’ U.S Post Office!

Exiting to the outdoors, my ears were perked by unusual noise – whistling as if calling someone and other commotions to get ones attention. I assumed it could be kids from the nearby school and was preparing to ignore such. In fact; just about in my ‘tune it out mode’ is when suddenly I heard and saw a man across the street shouting frantically in my direction, “stop – you’re going to loose everything!” Nothing in my hands, so I had nothing to loose. For some reason, either because I was hungry or food comes in mind when you see and hear a man shout those words, I assumed someone was about to drop his carry out meal from one of the other local food places. With my car door almost unlocked is when instinctively or call it woman intuition I knew to stop a white bronco looking vehicle having turned the corner off of O’Hear Ave just as this man was now waving his arms about anxiously. Out of the corner of my eye is when I saw the back passenger door of the vehicle swing open. At first I thought his groceries were going to fall out, then I panically wondered - a child, yet I remembered noting some kind of white plants bouncing back and forth from the sudden brake motion from this auto. The man proceeded to only close the door while stating again, ‘you were about to loose it all’. He must have been stunned by the drivers’ reply cause he repeated, oh you were wondering why you could here noise inside your automobile. It wasn’t until this Gentleman returned across the street to his original departure that I realized, ‘the gardening store’. He wasn’t worried about no viddles falling, he was concerned for his customer who just purchased a jeep full of Easter Lilies from his business. Now this guy could have thought, hey I got my money and he could have just let someone drive off with their rear side door open until the driver either realized it was swinging or the door was ripped from it’s hinges after colliding into something. But this Businessman went the extra steps. So Folks, if you are going to program a navigation system and/or plan a nice visit to” the Olde Village” on E. Montague, use the address 1049 East Montague Ave for DUKES GARDEN CENTER. This is the where people want and need to shop!

Today I stopped in to get a business card so I could be certain to list DUKES GARDEN CENTER address correctly. That is when I learned this Businessman’s’ name is Marty. Seems he has some deep roots in Charleston, SC. Possibly in his grandfather linage helping perhaps start the Paper Mill. Marty is currently working on getting the DUKES GARDEN CENTER website up, so I hope he will share on that site, the story of his SC heritage. So happens the person he assured the auto door was closed, is a regular customer. None the less, he could have just sat idle on the green; but he didn’t. I also learned from Marty that the regular Customer purchased the plants for a local church where Members will be placing Easter Lilies for each person whom is no longer and/or can not be with them this Easter.
